Chris Henry to Sign with the Bengals

According to a ESPN article, the Bengals intend to re-sign Chris Henry after releasing him from the team a few months ago. The Bengals released him after assault charges were filed against him. Those charges have been dropped and apparently the Bengals are interested in getting Henry back on the team.

I'm not sure what to think about this. On one side of the coin, Henry is a talented explosive receiver that has a Randy Moss-like frame. On the other side, Henry has proved to be nothing more than a thug that can't stay out of trouble. But doesn't this guy deserve another chance since his last episode turned out to be a fraud? We were going to give him another chance before that happened so I believe we should. If we don't he'll just end up in another team's uniform.

Plus he already knows the Bengals system and with Chad Johnson suffering a shoulder injury in Sunday night's preseason game against the Lions the stock of WR is rising in Cincinnati. But are the Bengals desperate enough to sign Chris Henry? I hope so.

Millions of Americans of all ages and races are frequent pot smokers. There are millions more who are infrequent pot smokers. Smoking marijuana clearly has fewer dangerous effects on society than legal drugs such as alcohol. So without further a due, here's my top 5 reasons Marijuana should be legal.

5. The war on Marijuana has failed. It's been outlawed for 75 years and millions of people continue to use the drug annually. Marijuana is currently the nation's largest cash crop and it's grown worldwide. There is no evidence to suggest that this trend will reverse itself anytime soon.

4. Because of prohibition, non-violent drug offenders have faced fines, penalties, and even jail/prison time due to a drug that is much safer than the legalized alcohol. Why do we continue to punish those who use a drug that doesn't threaten society?

3. A regulated legal market for marijuana would do several good things for society. A) the drug would be cheaper so we'd save money and be able to spend towards other things, thus boosting the economy. B) Children wouldn't be exposed to other illegal drugs that are often sold alongside marijuana through dealers. C) Teenagers would have less incentive to sell to their friends and peers since the drug would be readily available at designated retailers/locations.

2. Legalized marijuana would reduce if not completely wipe out all marijuana sales from overseas criminal/terrorist organizations. These organizations profit billions of dollars each year just from marijuana sales. The result is an overflow of marijuana onto US streets and opportunities for criminal empires to expand.

1. Smoking pot isn't dangerous to society. There have been no more than 0 deaths directly related to the smoking of marijuana. Can we say the same for legal drugs such as alcohol?

Sure, these are pretty simple reasons but it's a simple issue. There are no logical reasons to ban marijuana especially if you're in favor of keeping alcohol as a legal drug. Who cares if it's addictive? Aren't all things enjoyable?

There are those who say Chad needs to be a different kind of player. The shut up and play kind of player. I've never been one of those people. I like the entertainment factor that he brings to the game. I loved the touchdown celebrations until they were banned (thanks No Fun League.) I love the crazy off-the-wall interviews that us Bengals fans have grown accustomed to. I was even able to muster some appreciation for the golden mohawk back in '06. But this?

By "this" I'm referring to Chad Johnson taking the first step to legally changing his last name to "Ocho Cinco" in the state of Florida. This, I assume, would mean that Chad could have "Ocho Cinco" on the back of his jersey without being fined 5k.

From a business standpoint this is pure genius. Once again assuming that the league would allow this, the sales for this jersey would go through the roof, and of course players get a cut of their jersey sales. Maybe this would makeup for the extra money Chad wanted this offseason?

Regardless, I don't think this is going to have any affect other than Ocho being bombarded with constant attention, which is hardly anything new. I doubt this is going to be a "distraction" although I'm sure there's a whole panel of ESPN knuckleheads that would love to disagree. Bottom line, whether it's "Johnson" or "Ocho Cinco" on the jersey in '08, we're just glad to have this guy back in the Jungle for another season.

Brett Favre Traded to the Jets- What?

If you're a fan of the NFL you know all about Brett Favre. He retired... but didn't. When he requested to be reinstated and was granted reinstatement he wasn't welcomed back to Green Bay with open arms. They treated Favre like cancer. Nobody wanted him to be around the team. Sure, management sat down and talked to him. But apparently they didn't want him to even compete with Aaron Rodgers for the starting job. They just wanted to get him out of Green Bay as soon as possible and apparently benefits didn't really matter. The only way they could get what they originally asked for, a first round pick, is if Brett Favre takes the Jets to the Super Bowl. All the Packers are guaranteed right now is a fourth round pick. But something is better than nothing and there have been a wealth of great players drafted in much later rounds than the fourth.

But isn't this sad? I was looking forward to Favre landing on a better team. The Buccaneers would've have been a nice option. The Vikings obviously would've been the best option. But trading him to the AFC was a smart move. I could very well be wrong and I hate to underestimate a hall of fame quarterback but I don't think the Jets have a shot at making the playoffs this year. The AFC is ridiculously stacked with teams like the Patriots, Colts, Jaguars, Chargers, Steelers, and not to mention all the deadly sleeper teams. Let's break this trade down into basics:

A) Favre was traded to a decent team. Not a good team. Certainly not as good as the Packers and most likely not as good as the Buccaneers. The Jets will be significantly better with Favre.

B) Even though Favre will improve the Jets it's unfortunate for Brett that he will be playing the Patriots twice this year instead of the Bears.

That's all there is too it. It's a terrible deal for Favre to come back to. I wonder if he's having any second thoughts yet? I wish him well and hope that he proves everybody (including myself) wrong and sweeps the Patriots 2-0. But how long are we going to give Brett at the Jets? Is one year too much? Two years at most? Is there really anyway to predict what Brett Favre is going to do tomorrow let alone the next day or the next month? If there's one certainty about this whole Brett Favre post-retirement saga it's that the first time Brett Favre comes out in his #4 New York jets uniform it's going to be weird.

Bo Jangles signing in here. Just got back from the NYC yesterday and have been recuperating from my journey. One thing I learned... Ten hours on the road in a rice rocket does a number on your ass/back.

But alas I have returned from the best hip-hop concert of the summer. Some noteables... Jay-Z showed up out of nowhere in the middle of Nas's set to perform Black Republicans. The whole place went crazy and started throwing up the Roc. I'll be sure to post up some pics later on as well as a few videos you're sure to enjoy.

I forgot how much I hated sightseeing. Sure, it sounds all good when you're planning a trip until you start waiting through lines and shelling out cash. I waited in line for the empire state building for hours, paid $20 to do so, then when I finally got up to the top I was ready to leave in 5-10 minutes.

This is a prelude to my NFL preview post that will be up sometime within the next month or so where I'll be sharing my thoughts about the upcoming season. For now though, the stage is all Matt Ryan's.

The Falcons are hands-down, bar-none, the worst team in the NFL. You could argue that the Dolphins are just as bad but they kept their best player in town. As for DeAngelo Hall, Warren Dunn and Alge Crumpler? Well, they'll be seeing better days this year elsewhere.

Who does that leave for Matt Ryan to work with? Can you honestly name one active Falcons player off the top of the melon right now besides Matt Ryan? I know for a fact that I can't... I can picture that one tall WR that sucks but I don't even know his name.

To sum it up all nice and simply, this year is going to be absolute hell for Matt. I can already see the highlights on Sports Center. Sacked, Sacked, Sacked. If you're setting odds for a quarterback to get injured this year, you're putting Matt Ryan at the very tip-top of the list. With no noteable offensive players, including lineman, Matt is going to be on his back a fair amount and what else can you expect? It's not that he's a bad quarterback. It's that his team has gone to shambles since Vick decided to throw his life away.

Even though his team sucks and he's been put in the worst situation possible as a rookie, I can't muster any sympathy for this guy. For one, I don't even like the guy. He reminds me too much of Eli Manning... very awkward and strange looking. But then again, I don't hate the guy either nor do I wish him any harm or bad luck. I'm just saying... My third eye seen it comin'. Word to Meth.

So I'm sitting down on the couch about to relax after a brutal shoulders/back workout and as I'm flipping through the Direct TV guide I instinctively tune in to NFL Network's total access. Highlights of Brett Favre's career are being played while Rich and Adam debate whether Favre will return for the '08 season. As my hand grips the remote to change the channel I pause to think.

What if Favre returns for the '08 season? What if the Packers don't want Favre back? What if the Packers decide to move on without Favre but Favre still wants to play football? All intriguing possibilities...

So let's dig deeper, starting with what if Favre returns for the '08 season.

If Favre returns for the '08 season it's going to be turmoil for the Packers organization. They've already placed the reigns in the hands of Aaron Rodgers (or is it Rogers?) Wide receivers have already been working out with Aaron for the majority of the reps, getting down their timing and patterns. Reports state that Aaron has taken over as the vocal leader on the offense and has really embraced the leadership role with full force. If Favre decides to return the Packers have to make a huge decision. Do we want the old man who our fans love or do we want to look toward the future with the kid?

That's a tough decision. But let's consider the slim possibility that a) Favre returns to the NFL and b) the Packers reject Favre. This would mean that Brett Favre would be released from the Packers and would be a legitimate free agent. Oh, the possibilities!

Personally, I would love this scenario. I've always hated the Packers and their horrendous uniforms. But I've always had a respect for Favre. He's the guy that's there solely because he has a passion for the game of football. He's a cowboy. A gunslinger. An American sports legend. For him to return to the league after "retiring" and suiting up with another team would be perfect.

What teams would be interested in Favre? Surely anybody who was in desperate need of a starting QB. One likely possibility would be Tampa Bay. A more interesting possibility would be my NFC pick for the '08 season, the Vikings.

Please don't get wrong, Packer fans. I dislike the Vikings almost as much as I do the Packers but they've got a team lined up this year. Jared Allen, Madeiu Williams, Adrian Peterson... Need I say more? Just imagine Favre and AP on the same team... playing Green Bay twice a year! Surely there is no better place to suit up if Green Bay won't take you back!

But this is all pure speculation at this point. In my opinion, Favre will remain at home with his wife and daughters. But that's not in concrete until Brett says the magic words. I'm retired... Seriously!

I'm a little late posting about this topic, I know. But it's better late than never.

Most of you loyal Can't Hang subscribers know that I'm a huge sports nut. I watch ESPN/NFL Network like housewives watch Opera everyday at 4. I follow my teams and players religiously. My NFL team happens to be the Cincinnati Bengals.

It's been a hard life to be a Cincinnati sports fan. I'm old enough to remember the heart aches of the 49'ers/Bengals super bowl where the Bengals had their first championship in sight. I can remember all the draft busts, in particularly Akili Smith. Throughout most of the time I was growing up, the 90's, the Bengals were the laughing stock of the NFL. Then hope arrived in Cincinnati.

Marvin Lewis, Chad Johnson, and Carson Palmer arrived over the years and things started looking much brighter for the Bengals organization. I'm almost embarrassed to say I was happy when we went from 2-14 to 8-8. But major improvement doesn't happen overnight, unless you're Eli Manning and the New York Giants. I knew our time would eventually come and the Bengals seemed to have at least one piece of the success puzzle with franchise QB Carson Palmer under center.

Then last season came and ended. I honestly cannot remember a more disappointing season than the '07 season. Nobody ever seemed to be on the right page. One game the offense would play incredible and the defense would stink. The next game the defense would play phenomenal and post a shut-out but the offense could never get the chains moving. How frustrating!

The season ended on a positive note with the Patriots losing the Super Bowl to the heavy underdogs, the New York Giants. But then out of nowhere comes Mr. Ocho Cinco running his mouth about wanting to be traded to the Redskins or even the Dolphins.

Yes, this was the same Ocho Cinco who has been the face of Cincinnati practically since he arrived as a rookie from Oregon State. Cincinnati loves this guy not only for his super-freakish athleticism and emotional play, but also for his easy-going joker personality and his creative end zone celebrations. Whenever you go to the Jungle, you see a sea of black and orange 85 jerseys. The city worships this guy.

I loved the guy too. I still do. But it was hard for me to understand his motives. Did he really wanted to be traded to Miami or did he just want more money? Was he that frustrated with the front office about being a "cancer" on the team? I didn't know for sure. One thing I did know for sure was that the Bengals were in trouble if the man meant business.

Draft day came along and there was still no trade talk. I was actually hoping that the Bengals would trade him for a early first round pick before the draft was over with. But my hopes, like many of my Bengals hopes, never materialized. Little did I know then that it may have been for the best.

Now that training camp has arrived, Mr. Chad didn't stick to his word and actually showed up. Of course, we knew he would show up all along as nobody wants to lose money. But some figured he would show up and pull a T.O. In other words, stir up problems and be a major distraction to the team. While this still could happen, it appears unlikely. On the contrary, Bengals.com reported that on one of the first days of training camp Chad seemed to be back to his normal self. He was joking with teammates and even gave a shout out to a local news camera saying, "I love you Cincinnati. Vote for Obama."

Only time will tell if keeping Chad was the right move. I hate this analogy but think of Kobe Bryant at the end of the NBA season last year and look where him and his team are now... The Finals. Could the same scenario happen for Ocho and the Bengals? Probably not. But these Cincinnati hopes will never die.

What's really cool about the Carter III is the cover. It's a well-known fact that rap albums that have anything to do with a baby are instant classics. Turn your pages to 1993, Niggas is gettin' smoked G. Believe me! Yeah, that's right. Notorious BIG's debut album, Ready to Die, had a big black baby on the cover and it's considered one of the best hip-hop records of all time. There was also that little gem known as Illmatic that featured a baby/little kid on the cover and that didn't do too bad either. Maybe I'm just crazy but baby covers= succe$$.

I'm having mixed feelings. It's fine to celebrate the first black presidential candidate in American history. I think that should be celebrated. These mixed feelings start coming in when I hear rappers promoting Obama solely (it seems) because of his color. You never hear anybody in the game promoting him for his morals or ideas. Sometimes I wonder how many of these supporters in the game even know what the man stands for. Personally, I think it would be great to have a black president. Not because I love black people or hate white people. Just because there's never been one.

Now does that mean I'll vote for Obama? Right now I'm honestly undecided. It's way too early for me to come to a decision at this time because there's so much that hasn't happened yet. To be completely honest, I'm not really that crazy about either mainstream candidate- McCain or Obama. For me the perfect situation come November would be to see Ron Paul's name on the ticket. Then I would feel like I voted for somebody I really believed in. At the same time, I would have that sour feeling of completely throwing my vote away but who cares? It's one vote either way you look at it.

But in all likelihood Ron Paul probably won't run independent and even if he does there are debates approaching where I can be swayed into making a decision between Whitey and Blackey. One thing is for sure. Nas won't be swaying my opinion in the slightest... and they say music influences you. Hah!

Much has happened since I updated last. I was unable to update for a long lapse of time as I was being transferred to all sorts of places for work--- from Knoxville, TN to Fort Collins, CO and then finally to Salt Lake City, UT. If there is one conclusion I have come to from these travels it would be that Utah definitely has the upper hand when it comes to hot babes. Seriously, if you've never been to Utah you have no idea.

But anyway, I'm glad to finally have vast amounts of free time again so I can indulge in just chilling. But alas, much has happened since I updated so let's check these things out.

The Carter III leaks have dropped. I must admit that I wasn't excited about the Carter III. I, like many others, have just grown out of the whole Lil Wayne thing since he's way played out. Not only is he played out but it's a damn shame he didn't come up with the Hip Hop Weeklies before Crooked I because he would've/could've gone way longer than 52 weeks straight. The Celtics will face the LA Lakers in the NBA finals starting June 5th. I'll admit it. I officially jumped on the Celtics bandwagon this year. I had been following Rajon Rondo since he entered the league last year so the Celtics were already on my list. But then KG and Ray Allen were added into the mix and I've been watching nearly every game since. Here's to a few week's worth of the Bird/Magic highlight reels we'll be bombarded with now in celebration of the NBA's greatest rivalry. It's a basketball fan's dream to see these teams face off again for a title.
This may not be newsworthy but it's going up here regardless. 5 hour energy drinks are, simply put, the shit. Without them it would've been impossible to travel across country without taking stops to sleep. Knoxville to Fort Collins was a 24 hour drive on the dot. I took one 5 hour energy drink in Kansas and was set. From SLC to Kentucky was about a 28 hour drive and I needed two to make it back. So if you're ever making a huge road trip across country and don't want to take the time to sleep on the way I highly recommend 5 hour energy.
I had to squeeze this in here as well. If you don't know me you wouldn't know that I'm a huge sneaker head, particularly a huge Jordan sneaker head. Everybody’s talking. . . .

Combine equal parts your grandmother’s heeding wisdom and mischievous charm. Add a cup of beauty and a dash of and sex appeal. The result is singer/songwriter Nyasha Shani (knee-asha sha-knee), a young woman poised to lead a new generation in the R&B/Soul genre.

Originally hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, Nyasha was bitten early by the music bug. Her parents, both working professionals, saw the benefit in raising a well-rounded child and pushed Nyasha into music. She began her music career with the drums and woodwinds, before settling on the piano. However, since belting out Lionel Richie’s “Sela” at the tender age of three, Nyasha made it evident that her heart belonged to song.

“Music has always been my first love; but to be quite honest, I absolutely hated practicing!” she smirks in her East Coast-Midwest mélange accent. “Instead, I would spend countless hours listening to the radio, perfecting my ear, and turning every inch of my house into my own personal stage.”

Nyasha progressed from the piano and began studying voice in high school. During her high school years, she furthered her career development through various local performances and talent shows. A jazz-trained songstress with an honors Music degree from Wesleyan University, focused her collegiate years to studying the history of black musics.

“I have many inspirations, musically. I love the era of jazz- the Billies and Louie’s- for their musicality and innovation; but I also love that bass-driven Down South hip-hop. My tastes vary depending on my mood, but I can’t deny, though, that I’m a sucker for the Quiet Storm hour. Nothing else can set the mood for me better than a good love song.”

Nyasha has spent the past five years perfecting her talents in composition, arranging, and performance. She has been seen performing in various shows throughout Connecticut and New York, including participation in the ASCAP Make Music New York series. In addition to her musical talents, Nyasha has spent years crafting her penmanship. Since writing her first pieces at the age of nine, she has written and arranged over 150 compositions and songs. With the Ninas, Dinahs Whitneys, Janets and Lauryns as her guides, Nyasha Shani is building her reputation as a strong songwriter, quickly attracting attention for her talents.

“When it comes to my writing, I draw inspiration from everything around me- the couple arguing about being pregnant again, a lover accepting the end of a relationship, or a woman who refuses to be tamed. Everything sparks an idea in my mind and the uniqueness of my craft lies in my perspective and word play. Can’t nobody tell a story like me.”

The preface of Nyasha Shani’s career has been written; however, her journey has only begun.
